Workplace health

Pre-employment medicals.

A role-specific health and fitness review after the employer or occupational health service provides the job requirements and questions to be answered.

Send only the report type and your contact details by ordinary email. We will explain the secure route for forms and medical information.

Check the route

Is this the right service?

A quick check before booking avoids the most common delays: the wrong form, missing records or a request that needs another clinician or organisation.

01

Suitable request

There is a conditional job offer or another lawful reason for assessment, with clear role demands and focused questions.

02

Occupational health may help

The request involves complex workplace adjustments, exposure surveillance, rehabilitation or detailed assessment of workplace risk.

03

Check first

The employer has supplied only a request for a generic “fit for work” certificate without explaining the role or purpose.

Clinical review

What the doctor considers.

A defensible pre-employment report answers proportionate questions about a defined role. It does not disclose an entire medical record or treat a diagnosis as an automatic barrier to work.

A report, certificate or referral is not guaranteed. The clinician must be able to support every statement from the information and examination available.

01

The role

Physical demands, safety-critical tasks, driving, shift patterns, exposures and other stated requirements.

02

Relevant health information

Only history, symptoms, treatment and function relevant to the questions and consent provided.

03

Examination or tests

Measurements or examination requested by the employer are completed when clinically and professionally appropriate.

04

Practical recommendations

The report may describe fitness, restrictions, review needs or adjustments within the doctor’s scope.

Prepare well

Bring the evidence, not just the form.

The right documents help the doctor answer accurately and reduce the chance of a second appointment.

What to provide

  • The employer or occupational health questionnaire
  • A job description and the role’s physical or safety-critical requirements
  • Photo ID and your signed consent or authority
  • An accurate medication list and relevant health information
  • Any specific test results or specialist letters requested for the role

Important limits

  • We confirm that the request is within a GP’s scope before booking
  • Complex workplace-risk questions may need an occupational health physician
  • The report is limited to the stated purpose and your consent
  • Further evidence or testing may be needed before an opinion is possible
  • The employer makes the employment decision and must meet its legal duties
From request to document

A clear four-step process.

We check the request before confirming an appointment, so you know the format, evidence and cost in advance.

01

Define

The employer provides the role, purpose, questions and required form.

02

Confirm

We review scope, consent, appointment type, fee and evidence before booking.

03

Assess

The doctor takes the relevant history and completes the agreed examination or measurements.

04

Report

A focused report is completed when sufficient evidence is available and sent only as authorised.

Useful answers

Before you enquire.

Requirements vary, but these principles help you prepare for the right appointment.

Can an employer ask health questions before offering a job?

Generally not. Section 60 of the Equality Act 2010 restricts pre-offer health questions, with limited exceptions. The employer should confirm that its request is lawful and proportionate.

Is this the same as an occupational health assessment?

Not always. A GP may complete a defined medical questionnaire or clinical assessment. Complex workplace exposure, adjustments, rehabilitation and organisational risk often need occupational health expertise.

Will the employer receive my full medical record?

No. A report should address the relevant questions and information you have authorised. An employer does not automatically receive your full records.

Can I see a report before it is sent?

Where the Access to Medical Reports Act applies, you can ask to see the report before it is supplied and ask for inaccurate or misleading facts to be corrected. The consent process explains the route that applies to your request.

Does the doctor decide whether I get the job?

No. The clinician provides an independent medical opinion within the agreed scope. The employer makes the employment decision and remains responsible for equality, data protection and workplace duties.

Request an appointment

Let us check the request first.

Email the report type, the organisation requesting it and your contact details. Please do not include medical information in ordinary email. We will reply with the secure next step and confirm suitability, what to bring, the fee and appointment length before booking.
