Something new or changing
Talk about a new illness, a symptom that has changed or a concern you are unsure how to approach.

Discuss changes in your skin and whether a photo, in-person examination or referral would help.
Review symptoms, current treatment and whether another form of assessment is needed.
Talk through discomfort or changes and agree on an appropriate next step.
Ask about an existing treatment or a longer-term concern; prescribing follows clinical assessment.
These are examples, not a complete list or a promise that every symptom can be diagnosed in one appointment. Severe or rapidly worsening symptoms may need urgent care.
We are designing the GP journey to help you explain your concern, understand the assessment and leave with a practical plan.

The practical questions about planned general medicine appointments.
It is a starting point for a wide range of new or ongoing health concerns. A GP can ask about symptoms and history, consider an assessment and explain the next step. Some concerns need a specialist or urgent service instead.
No. Some concerns need an in-person examination, test or a different service. A clinician will consider whether a remote format is suitable for your symptoms. Explore in-person GP care.
Not always. Your GP may need more information, an examination, test or follow-up before making a safe diagnosis or treatment decision.
A GP may recommend a test or referral when clinically appropriate. Availability, location and any extra costs would need to be explained separately.
Only if a GP decides it is appropriate after assessment. A consultation does not guarantee a medicine, and pharmacy supply may involve separate arrangements and charges.
